The company sells and produces between six to eight tons of Shea butter a month.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0267.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-543\" alt=\"DSC_0267\" src=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0267-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0267-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0267.jpg 321w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Before the Shea nut is processed, the nut enters the production center in its original form, straight from the tree. The nut is then taken to a mill and crushed into small particles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0270.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-544\" alt=\"DSC_0270\" src=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0270-300x257.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0270-300x257.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0270.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After the Shea nuts are crushed, they are roasted anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes depending on the moisture content within the nut. Workers must continuously turn the container to ensure the nuts do not burn.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When the roast is finished, the nuts are subsequently taken to a second mill, where the particles are mashed once more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0273.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-545\" alt=\"DSC_0273\" src=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0273-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0273-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0273.jpg 321w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Water is added to the crushed nut particles, as women stir the nut and water mixture for an hour or more. Gradually the chocolate colored mixture will turn into a pasty white substance, where the Shea butter production process continues.<\/p>\n<p>The Shea nut industry is predominated by women, who are involved in almost every aspect of Shea butter production.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0274.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-546\" alt=\"DSC_0274\" src=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0274-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0274-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nyujournalismprojects.org\/africadispatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0274.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When the ground Shea nut becomes an off white color, more water is added to the mixture to separate the Shea fat particles from the water.
