Hymn to Woody

I love Woody Allen. Latest news: the 70 years old movie director is planning to shoot a comedy in Paris, starring Michelle Williams. According to the Internet Movie Database, that will be his 42nd movie as a director. 42nd! Do you know any movie maker of his age that is still making movies after having done 41 of them?

Still according to IMDB, Manoel de Oliveira, the legendary Portuguese filmmaker who is now 98 years old (and still making movies, his last one, Belle Toujours is still in filming!), "only" made 40 movies.

My favorite, Jean-Luc Godard, who is now 76 might be a little too productive for the folks mentioned above. With 87 movies directed, he might hold the record for a man still alive!

What Woody Allen has in common with the last mentioned is a taste for the beautiful girl. Godard shot Brigitte Bardot, Jean Seberg, or Ana Karina. Allen shot the American beauties of the seventies; he recently revealed Scarlett Johanson's sensuality, and now Michelle Williams...

Although the guy is restlessly shooting movies, he still manages to play clarinet in the Woody Allen Band every Mondays at the Carlyle...

Humorous, well-read, Francophile, how could Woody Allen not be the next US president? Maybe he is just not interested. I don't see a Woody Allen movie like any other movie. Each of his films is like an episode of a huge series that started with his first movie and will end with his last. You don't go and see Match Point, you go and see the "latest Woody Allen."

P.S: And for those who can't stop comparing Curb Your Enthusiasm with Woody Allen's movies, you have to realize that it's not true. Although he is also great, Larry David is not an intellectual.
