The mission now was to make sure no Latino family in the city of Gainesville went hungry. The Hispanic Alliance, known as La Alianza, in Spanish, received 40,000 pounds in food donations and has distributed fresh, nutritious and culturally appropriate ingredients to 9,000 families since April, according to Vanesa Sarazua, founder and executive director of the Hispanic Alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur operations switched to helping people with basic needs,\u201d said Sarazua, who contracted COVID-19 in July. \u201cWe don\u2019t see the situation getting any better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarazua said the organization\u2019s November food distribution was the second largest one, with 700 families receiving assistance through their drive through. The first largest event was in May, with 750 families receiving boxes of food.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the coronavirus tears through the nation, in Georgia, Latinos continue to disproportionately feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Latinos or Hispanics, of any race, make up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/cedsci\/table?q=Georgia%20Race%20and%20Ethnicity&amp;tid=ACSDP1Y2019.DP05&amp;hidePreview=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9.8%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Georgia\u2019s population, but they account for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/covidtracking.com\/race\/dashboard#state-ga\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of coronavirus cases in the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following graphs show the racial breakdown of COVID-19 cases in Georgia. The state has reported a total of 443,822 cases of COVID-19 and 8,971 coronavirus-related deaths as of Dec. 6. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified discrimination, healthcare utilization and occupation as factors that contribute to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/health-equity\/race-ethnicity.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased COVID-19 risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among r<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acial and ethnic \u201cminority\u201d groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarazua said many Latino Georgians in her community struggle with not knowing when they should seek medical attention, and losing their jobs and working less hours, as those who are undocumented are excluded from federal economic aid. \u201cThey had to tough out the covid storm on their own with no resources,\u201d Sarazua said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high number of COVID-19 cases among Latino Georgians may be in part due to their overrepresentation in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-05-17\/latino-essential-workers-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">essential workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including farm and poultry factory workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe jobs they have to do are critical,\u201d Sarazua said. \u201cThe immigrant workforce is important.\u201d In Georgia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/immigrants-in-georgia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in eight workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an immigrant, making up a crucial part of the state\u2019s labor force, according to the American Immigration Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in April, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/breaking-news\/hundreds-georgia-poultry-workers-have-tested-positive-for-covid\/K0vGYEGTSbvAYIeU3I6qtM\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundreds of poultry workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Hall County, in northeastern Georgia, tested positive for the novel virus. Hall County, with a population of 206,349 residents, has so far reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dph.georgia.gov\/covid-19-daily-status-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12,352 cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the coronavirus, and has in the past two weeks reported 419 cases per 100,000 residents. Hispanics or Latinos make up 9.4% of the population of the Hall County city of Gainesville, known as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sos.ga.gov\/state_symbols\/state_poultry.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poultry Capital of the World<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d according to the U.S. Census Bureau.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One out of every four Latino poultry workers were testing positive for COVID-19, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsav.com\/news\/local-news\/georgia-news\/black-latino-georgians-among-those-most-impacted-by-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from June. Latinos make up 30% of the workforce in the meat and poultry industry but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantamagazine.com\/news-culture-articles\/covid-19-strikes-deep-in-georgias-latinx-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">56% of cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Atlanta Magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in southern Georgia, cases have spiked due to infections among farmworkers, according to the nonprofit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiahealthnews.com\/2020\/07\/latinos-georgia-feel-doubly-vulnerable-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia Health News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In May, COVID-19 cases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.valdostadailytimes.com\/news\/echols-cases-nearly-triple-after-migrant-worker-testing\/article_d94166bc-9b67-11ea-a29a-a7e31eca372f.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tripled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Echols County after a testing event held by the South Health District and the Migrant Farmworkers Clinic, Valdosta Daily Times reported. Latinos make up 24.6% of the population in Echols County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among initiatives to address the disparities affecting Latino communities in the state, Emory University <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.emory.edu\/stories\/2020\/08\/emory_mexican_consulate_atl_covid_disparities\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teamed up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in August with the Mexican Consulate in the capital city of Atlanta totest Latino residents for COVID-19. Other organizations, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wgxa.tv\/news\/local\/organization-helps-get-covid-19-tests-to-largely-at-risk-local-latino-communities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Organized Relief Efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have conducted free testing in Georgia. The Latino Community Fund launched in March a COVID-19 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lcfgeorgia.org\/covid-19-relief\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relief fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to assist vulnerable communities, aiding in food distribution, testing and rent payments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to discuss how to make things better while it\u2019s still fresh in our minds,\u201d Sarazua said. \u201cWe need to improve on protecting critical, frontline essential workers in a crisis.
