Posted 03.30.03 BOXING; WILLIAMS HEADS GARDEN CARD By Erik Boland Ricardo Williams Jr.'s boxing career began at age 8 and has resulted in two United States junior championships, a Goodwill Games title and an Olympic silver medal by age 18. Williams, 20, received a $1.4 million bonus in January 2001 from DiBella Entertainment after turning pro. Williams, a junior welterweight from Cincinnati, is 7-0, and hopes to continue his steady rise when he takes on Israel Cardona (34-5) of Hartford in the co-featured bout on a card April 27 at Madison Square Garden. A heavyweight bout between Jameel McCline (27-2-3) of Far Rockaway, Queens, Shannon Briggs (36-3-1) of Brooklyn is the other featured matchup on the nine-fight card, announced yesterday in Manhattan. HBO will televise the featured bouts. |
