John McPhee, Oranges (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1967)
If nothing else Oranges, McPhee's third book is demonstrative of his sheer range. It probes the botany, history and industry of the fruit, and contains sketches of orange growers, orange botanists, orange pickers, orange packers, producers of orange concentrate, as well as a profile of Ben Hill Griffin of Frostproof, Florida, the last orange baron.

How did McPhee conceive of the idea to write Oranges? While pouring his morning glass of OJ once, he wondered why it looked so perfect, every time.

Edmund Fuller wrote in The Wall Street Journal, "Fascinating. A sterling example of what a fresh point of view, a clear style, a sense of humor and diligent investigation can do to reveal the inherent interest in something as taken-for-granted as your morning orange juice."
