Tracy Kidder, The Soul of a New Machine (Back Bay Books 2000, Atlantic Monthly Press, 1981)
This book follows the building of a highly advanced computer under an impossible deadline in the 1970's. Like The Mythical Man Month, this book shows that computer culture in the 1970's and the lessons learned from it are still valid several decades later. The portrait that is painted in words describes beautifully the personalities of a profession many at the time viewed as simple nerdy and boring. Changing a few names and terms and the book could easily describe a 1990's Internet startup. Tracy Kidder won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 in the General Non-Fiction category for his book.
