Tom Wolfe, The Right Stuff (1979)
Tom Wolfe is considered the father of New Journalism and his book The Right Stuff is considered to be one of his best. The book, which was made into a popular movie in 1983, provides a wonderful history of the United States space program from the perspective of the pilots. The story begins with Chuck Yeager and his ultimately successful attempts to breaking the sound barrier and ends with the Mercury 7 astronauts. Written in a novelistic style, the book is funny, historically enlightening and an absolute classic.
