Kara Swisher, ol.com: How Steve Case Beat Bill Gates, Nailed the Netheads and Made Millions in the War for the Web The book is essentially a biography of the World's dominant online service provider by a Washington Post reporter who was given inside access to the company in 1986. Many of the characters in the story of AOL are famous recognizable names like Steve Case, Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Impossible to read this book without getting a sense of what the dot-com boom was about and the tremendous ups and downs that came with it. The New York Times review of the book described it as a "warts-and-all history of one of the great capitalist success stories of all time." The same review criticized the book for its "clunky, jargon-strewn style." The Christian Science Monitor criticized the book for its "too gentle look at America's largest online service" and called it a "readable, but sanitized, history lesson."
