Alan Wald, The New York Intellectuals: The Rise and Decline of the Anti-Stalinist Left from the 1930's to the 1980's (University of North Carolina Press, 1987) Wald explores several generations of left-wing intellectuals, including Dwight McDonald, Philip Rahv, Mary McDonald, Susan Sontag and the Trillings. A Marxist himself, Wald charts the history of revolutionary American Marxism distinct from the Stalinism of the official Communist Party, searching for a "usable past." Ellen Schrecker, who reviewed the book for The Nation, writes that "the trouble is that the tradition he finds _ essentially that of the Trotskyist New York intellectuals of the 1930s _ is flawed. Few of its adherents stayed the course." MORE: Excerpt from the book Book review The Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism essay on the New York Intellectuals Amazon |
