Andrew Tobias, The Best Little Boy In The World (1973)
When this book was first appeared in 1973, Tobias published it under a pen name, John Reid. The Best Little Boy is about a perfect, well-rounded, straight-A student who just happens to realize that he is gay, growing up gay in a straight world.

Today Tobias no longer needs to hide. He is a best-selling financial writer and journalist.

The Best Little Boy is written in the form of a memoir. Tobias empowers the genre, which if not frowned upon, is not taken particularly seriously in the journalistic world, with his honesty, humor, and elegant prose.

The book's sequel, The Best Little Boy in the World Grows Up has been recently published with an introduction by Andrew Sullivan.

San Francisco Bay Area Reporter writes:

The quality of this book is fantastic because it comes of equal parts honesty and logic and humor. It is far from being the story of a Gay crusader, nor is it the story of a closet queen. It is the story of a normal boy growing into maturity without managing to get raped into, or taunted because of, his homosexuality. . . . He is bright enough to be aware of his hang-ups and the reasons for them. And he writes well enough that he doesn't resort to sensationalism.

The New York Times Book Review, David Brudnoy

"John Reid comes out slowly, hilariously, brilliantly...One reads this utterly honest account with the shock of recognition."
