Clever Twisting of Meaning

Senator John Kerry spoke to a group of students at Pasadena City College yesterday and told them in so many words that they'd better stay in school or they would run the risk of getting stuck in Iraq. (Which is a true statement) President Bush and other republicans are jumping on the bandwagon saying that Kerry's comment was disrespectful to the troops now serving in Iraq. I strongly disagree. Kerry said what most of the troops are saying- no one wants to be in Iraq, the American people do not want our troops there and our troops themselves want to come home. I was interested in the article on CNN.com because it boasted all the opinions of Kerry's distaste and didn't include quotes from Kerry himself until the end. As we know most people don't get to the end of the article so the article in some ways is seemingly trying to form the readers opinion about the issue. The comment was aimed at Bush and was right on target. It was an embarassing thing for the President and I think he is twisting Kerry's words as though he is unpatriotic. What is unpatriotic is going against everyone and keeping America in a war we don't need to be in. The students a Pasadena City College are at a greater risk of being drafted by the army because maybe... they one don't have a great interest in school and are still floating to see what it is they want to do or two don't have the burden of educational loans hanging over their heads. Kerry was simply and rightfully so saying stay in school or end up in Iraq. What is so wrong with this statement and why is everyone jumping on Bush's bandwagon as if this is the worst thing anybody has ever said. It has absolutely nothing to do with the troops and Kerry wasn't saying that the troops in Iraq weren't smart. For Bush to completely ignore the real issue is quite political of him and I am interested in the fact that the American media is letting him off the hook by acting as though they are siding with Bush. The article almost discounts Kerry by saying that even the democrats are criticizing him and my question is who cares? What about the raw essence and politics behind the statement? I feel as though real issues are being ignored and why? I wish I knew.
