The Bridge-and-Tunnel Crowd

I went through a Danish newspaper online this evening, Politiken, just to catch up on what's happening back there. Expecting to read local Danish news, I was surprised. Not by the lack of local news, they were there, the game between FCK, the Pride of Copenhagen (and also a soccer team) was playing Brondby IF who has a fan base similar to what I discovered is called the Bridge-and-Tunnel crowd in New York. People from the suburbs. The dicotomy usually goes the suburb vs city, and it's a big deal in Denmark, covering all of the frontpages. Which was also the case this evening.

No, my surprise was mainly connected to the similarity of the other news with those I have encountered here in New York. The Kate Moss story was there, the whole case about H&M and the pictures in The Daily Mirror of her sniffing cocaine. And a story about Bob Dylan being boykott by HMV because he only sells his cds in Starbucks. And of course, the story about hurricane Rita.

In the midst of this enormous load of information you are met with from all sorts of channels all the time, you also find some stories being more persistently told. In the case of hurricane Rita, I would say because of its enourmous importance, and sometimes maybe because some stories have more "star quality" than others, as in the case of Kate Moss. And sometimes maybe because this is what not only the media, but also we do. Tell a story that we hear somewhere else. Reproduce and maybe vary it. And sometimes it's maybe just plain old laziness.

The world is very big. And it is also very small. There's a Bridge-and-Tunnel crowd in every city.
