Saudi Women Shock American Official and Media

There are a lot of news elements. But after reading the Saudi Women Have Message for U.S. Envoy , an article published in Sept 28th issue of The New York Times, I have found out that extreme is one of them. The question is that how media can cover this shocking event? The New York Times article offer new findings for US government and public.

Karen P. Hughes, one of the US Department of State’s senior officials, is shocked by Saudi women’s response on her most recent visit to Saudi Arabia as it is covered by the article.

She talked about women’s rights and freedom.

I think what she told the Saudi women is not spreading an American message in Saudi Arabia as some of the women participants claimed. Ms. Hughes said women of that country should be free. If women have the right to vote or drive is not an American way of living. Freedom is a human notion and I think anybody who appreciates human values agree with what Hughes said regardless of what kind of agenda she carries or who she represents.

When_ Ms. Hughes_ says she hopes Saudi women “would be able to drive and ‘fully participate in society’ much as they do in her country” is not a wrong message.

The failure of the 500 Saudi women, attended the event, comes form their reactive responses. Because she is American, we should resist whatever she says. This is really sorrowful and a wrong mentality.

What is contradictory is that the article says the meeting was held in one of the most liberal cities of Saudi Arabia. So how can we imagine the conservative ones?

What I concluded form this article is that the US foreign policy is in trouble because they have started to address Islamic public very late. They used to address their governments and support them, forgetting their people. This article shows a new kind of blowback against the US foreign policy. It says if the previous blowbacks were form middle east government like previous Iraqi regime and current Syrian government, this time the blowbacks are on people’s level like Saudi Arabia women. This is why the New York Times article is successful in explaining the current US foreign policy’s status for US government and public in a journalistic method.
