Are You Gonna Eat That?

After finally getting around to watching Super Size Me last week, I was under the impression that the entire U.S. of A. was destined to go do down person by person at the hands of saturated fats and cholesterol.

As a result, Americans are on a million different diets, each one more absurd than the one preceding it. W magazine made it their duty to talk some sense into all of us this month.

In “The Unusual Suspects,” Oz Garcia (no relation), a fashion photographer/nutritionist (huh?), suggests eating a baguette instead of whole wheat bread for nutritional value, advises us to steer clear of bananas because they make you fat and eats white bread dipped in egg yolk during his interview with Jennifer B. Matlin. Her final paragraph includes the following gem:

And therein lies the problem. As naïve as it is to believe that a few nuts are going to do the trick, or that a snack of fruit (sans cheese) is going to do me in, it’s even more naïve to think that any one food is going to make me fat or skinny.

You mean the cabbage soup diet doesn’t work?

Kudos to Ms. Matlin for cutting through the nonsense, even if it meant she’s sabotaged future articles. Both she and Mr. “Super Size” Spurlock took a simple idea (don’t let food be the bane of your existence) and made it simpler.
