I sympathize with the people in charge at the New York Times. They must be asking themselves how the hell they’ve gotten to this point, and I’m sure they’re trying to work out a solution. It seems pretty clear to me that Judy Miller will drag the Times down. Time staffers like Maureen Dowd would seem to agree. Of course, Times management has to consider a lot of things before deciding whether or not to fire her. And if they do so, they’re going to have a huge headache with the union representing her. Not to mention they’ll probably have to spend a lot of money at a time when they should be pinching pennies.
But they should also consider what readers will think if they see Judy Miller’s byline in the paper again. The hit the paper would take at that point would be worse than any union fight.
