I do some occasional office work for a 75 year old doctor that does not have a computer. I spend a lot of time grumbling (in my head, of course) as I write out 20 plus checks that could be paid immediately with a quick click of the mouse. I file her masses of papers; she can't even type.
So it seems though, my occasional boss is one of a truly dying breed. Tom Feran of the Cleveland Plain Dealer uncovered the one of the oddest new members of the techno-omnipresent age: The Amish .
For 115 years, The Budget has acted as a shared news source for Amish and Mennonite people. Now, they're taking their news to the Web. Amish people. Who don't use electricity. Have an online newspaper.
Sure, the Orlando Sentinel let go of 21 employees this week. The newspaper industry is taking some hits, but the newspaper's power to reach people has reached new heights. If anyone can read an Amish newspaper, maybe we're not so bad off.
I'm sure I should be more worried about getting a job-- because that's what this is all about, right? I'm not worried so about the readership habits of my peers. Not to sound dopey, but I faith that even if no one is interested in being a loyal, devoted "consumer" of information, the curiosity of the mind is not stunted. I'm with you, Tonya-- numbers are decieving if you don't take into account variety of choice.
