Recently, John McManus wrote this commentary on the impending state of America's newspapers.
He notes that considering the string of layoffs this year, Knight Ridder newspapers aren't the only ones in danger of corporate buyout-- a diseased fate at best.
McManus' solution to the problem of making news organizations beholden to the fluctuations of the market is a boycott. That's right-- buyers of newspapers should boycott-- "stand up to Wall Street"-- to save their newspapers. He thinks it's possible with the power of the internet.
If you ask me, though-- we can't even get people to read the newspaper. Who's going to defend it?
