When I think of East Asian television personalities, I think of Connie Chung and Anne Curry. They are far a few between. But has any one wondered where all the East Asian men heavy weights are on network news broadcasts? Or even in local news? Back home in Chicago, Linda Yu is the dominating Asian anchorwoman on ABC's nightly news. But there is not a male equivalent. There is an obvious push to add people of color to a news lineup, but minority representation in the news still has a long way to go. And it seems that women have become the minority of choice. And today, if you are an ethnic woman, well, the ball is in your court.
But is it because Asian men are pursuing other fields such as business and technology? Or are Asian men dismissed in broadcast news? If so, what kind of image are news programs trying to convey by hiring female Asian reporters rather than male ones?
