Keeping Journalism Alive in an Area of Devastation

In September 12th issue of The New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/12/business/media/12media.html?pagewanted=1 , a spokesman for WGNO-TV said that the ABC affiliated station is “definitely committed to remaining in this [New Orleans] market. In an era where advertising dollars determine the viability of a news outlet, this is a mighty statement that ABC and other media outlets will commit to. They are counting on reconstruction efforts, and the money that their advertisements will bring in. But these outlets can only operate for so long without any kind of revenue. No one can tell when reconstruction dollars will make it into the city. It will be interesting to see how long the parent companies of these New Orleans media outlets will continue to support them through this period of tragedy and desperation.
