INDIA SIGNS NEW TREATY RESTRICTING CHILD LABOR

By Sanjay Suri

India was among the member nations of the International Labor Organization (ILO) that ratified a treaty aiming to end employment of children in pornography, prostitution, slavery and hazardous work.

The treaty, adopted unanimously by the 174 member-nations, will have a bearing on the future of millions of Indian children, including those who work as domestic labor, delegates told India Abroad.

"For the first time, we have a convention that would cover children employed as domestic labor in India," Gabriella Cooper of Anti-Slavery International told India Abroad.

The new convention takes the issue of child labor in countries such as India or Pakistan beyond just bonded labor in carpet factories, Cooper added.
