There have only been 11 top grossing films of all time. That means these films received the most box office money out of all the other films at the time.

The first highest grossing film was “The Birth of A Nation,” a controversial film about the KKK. Despite its troubling material, the film employed new techniques that fascinated audiences, which made it an instant hit at the time. “The Birth of a Nation” managed to maintain its status of highest grossing film for 25 years, before audiences went rabid for “Gone with the Wind.” When adjusted for inflation, the film has made more money than any other film released to this day. It also holds the record for the amount of time it maintained its highest grossing film status (when not adjusting for inflation), as it took 27 years for “The Sound of Music” to sell more tickets.

Right now “Avatar”, which was released in 2010, is the highest grossing film of all time. There was a brief period of time when “Avengers: Endgame” beat it out, but after a rerelease in 2021, “Avatar” is still going strong. What movie do you think will beat out the current champion in box office sales?
