The Cutting Edge: Dining Blogs

Since when did hard tacos become hard news? In these days of instantaneous journalism, it looks like being first is always the best—even when it comes to food. Dining blogs are relative new comers to the blogosphere. Restaurantgirl, Eater and Diner’s Journal are just some of the juicy dining pages on the web for, some, as little as a year.

But do restaurant reviews really need to be so cutting edge? According to the New York Times, food bloggers seem to feel that having the first restaurant review means being the “best.” Maybe in bustling Manhattan, the fast-paced social culture relies on being the first to gnash on the latest style of quail cuisine.

But in the end, isn’t a review a review? Aren’t reviews just a collection of opinions about the quality of the meat and mood lighting? There’s no need to rush, unless the quail is, indeed, walking off the table. There’s enough food to go around, even if you don’t get to it first.

Ho ho ho! Hard tacos and hard news. Pretty snappy writing there Christina. As for the obsession with being first, I imagine the first review is the most influencial, as for a while it dominates the well of information on a given restaurant, and potentially shapes other reviewers opinions.

I don't see anything wrong with the food blogs. In this day and age there's tons of beats to cater to and the more coverage out there the better, even if it is for tacos.

The internet is the best place for this stuff because with all the space out there, none of this "hard news" interferes with other subjects like it would in a newspaper. So let them have their cake and eat it too. I'll be on my on way.
