Urban Neighborhoods Welcome the Blogosphere

According to an article in the New York Times, gentrification and urban neighborhood blogs are proving to be a rather dynamic duo: “A link has been found between gentrification and the number of people who feel compelled to think out loud about the changes in their backyards,” reports the piece.

Neighborhood blogs are currently proliferating at rapid rates, especially in neighborhoods throughout cities like New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, D.C. and Portland. Brooklyn neighborhood Clinton Hill, according to Outside.in, the website that conducted the research, is “the most blogged-about neighborhood in America.” Clinton Hill’s most popular blog, Brownstoner.com, features information about housing, events and other local news.

I think neighborhood blogs are a great new way to connect as a community. In an age when everyone is on-the-go (or at least like to pretend they are) and many people have never even met their neighbors, a blog is a great way to facilitate communication within a certain area. And who wouldn’t like to bring back that quaint, gossipy quality that neighborhoods used to have?

Alas, Whitney, neighborhood 'blogs' will never quite be neighborhoods--the one-on-one (or two or three) face-to-face exchange is unique and sadly lacking more and more in the digital age.
