Famous....Interns?

What happened to the days when interns were the face-less workers behind magazines?

These days, it’s easier to pick out the interns in a crowd than the actual editors of magazines. LC started it all with The Hills when she left Laguna Beach in the car…that daddy bought her, loaded her hot pink suitcases and moved to her apartment in LA…for which I’m also sure daddy pays the rent. In the first season, she was shipped to New York to deliver a dress. I’ve been an intern at five different magazines and I’ve never even been asked to go to a different state, let alone across the country.

Most recently, Emily Weiss, fellow NYU student, was featured on The Hills as “super intern” and wow-ed the audience with her knowledge of flowers turning LC from peppy TeenVogue intern to quiet schlepper. And excuse me…Weiss is on the masthead as a contributor?! My fellow interns and I had a conniption when we read that.

Then came the I'm From Rolling Stone 15 minutes of uh, "fame" if you can call it that, which showcases interns who have no idea how to act. One of the chosen for Wenner’s magazine didn’t even come into the office on some days, another wrote while he was drunk and they all complained about re-writes. I’m sorry, doesn’t anyone know what being an intern is really like? I’m happy to do any task asked of me by my editors, and I have never known an intern to complain about re-writes, cause we’re ecstatic if we get to write something, period.

Now Go Go Luckey Productions is recruiting LC Part II for yet another reality television show. And I can assume that it will be just as unrealistic as the previous ones. They need not one, but four fashionistas for a new show called Rodeo Girls. The prize? An assistant position at a major fashion magazine, PR label or cosmetic line.

I have to admit, I am looking forward to discussing it at the office the next day. And I'll keep tuning into The Hills as my guilty Monday night pleasure, but I do hope I'm the next intern sent to LA to hang out for a dinner party.
