No One on Earth Can Make a Living Off Blogs

A recent post from one of the blogs on Urbanhonking links to a Business Week article in which music exec Dave Allen claims that no one on earth is capable of making a living off blogging and that bloggers should quit their day job. I find it really hard to believe that someone can make that statement now after so many are actually making a living off blogging. Perhaps not so many, but there are enough examples of blogs providing jobs -- in fact, even a team of employees -- that statements like that seem really outdated.

His statement is rather reminiscent of the music world’s underestimation of the power of the internet in changing the way in which people listen to music. Their inability to harness that new field can be seen in huge loss of revenues in music business. Perhaps he should start looking to blogging as a viable career option. Because in all honesty, it is.

I agree. It's pretty ridiculous that someone would say something so patently false. Also alarming is that this guy is a music exec. If anyone knows how rapidly technology changes media--and that new lucrative positions are most assuredly a byproduct of said phenom--it's someone who works with media every day.
