Taking Radio to the Next Level...Or Not?

The newest digital music system allows you to personalize your own radio station to suit your musical tastes. But is this just another fruitless attempt to outdo the iPod?

A user can customize their station by selecting favorite artists and genres, ban songs and create favorites. Sounds familiar, no? The difference with Slacker, Inc.'s latest creation is that personalized radio is no longer tethered to a PC.

To me, the purpose served by such a service, although a very cool idea, isn't much different than having an iPod. The company seems focused on the fact that their personalized radio is portable and can thus be brought along in the car, something that didn't exist before. But with the ability to fill an iPod with your own favorite music, create playlists, download podcasts and more, such a development just doesn't seem so new anymore.
