We Want Media

PopSciBlog recently featured this post about the giant squid caught off the coast of New Zealand.

Giant Squid have fascinated and terrified me since I was a kid, so for me these are exciting times indeed. A year ago all we knew of the giant squid came from a few beached specimens. Now we have footage of a living giant squid in the wild and a whole, 1,089 lb., calamari-rings-the-size-of truck-tires specimen. And if you believe The Future Is Wild, it will only be a few hundred million more years before they replace us as the most dominant species on land.

Frankly, I've been amazed by the amount of media coverage the giant squid, as a species, has gotten lately. I had no idea the public was as fascinated by these creatures as I am.

It's easy to get disheartened as a journalism student these days, especially after Mr. Montopoli's pep talk the other day. But when big outlets pick up on pet stories of mine, I can't help but feel a little shiver of pride.
