Old Dogs CAN Learn New Tricks

In a recent talk at Yale University, Slate Magazine editor Jacob Weisberg said that “print media is falling behind” and the industry is slow to “exploit” the internet. As an up and coming print journalist, I strongly disagree.

Those in the print newspaper industry are not reluctant dinosaurs and are making use of the advantages of the Internet. There are many print publications out there, such as our own Washington Square News and AM New York, where articles find new life through the web.

AM NY will begin to experiment with print-digital hybrid stories through its website, meaning it would publish an ongoing story, such as an election or crime case, in the print edition and would tell the reader to check the article's website for follow-ups. For the WSN, articles have feedback sections on the paper's website, so readers can voice their opinions about the article easier thus giving the paper more interactivity. To make things more convenient both of these web services are free so everyone with access to a computer can use it.

These innovations are just the beginning for the print business, and I strongly believe that given time it will evolve with technology and not die out like the telegram.
