Gawker Mobile: You've Got To Be Kidding ...

An anonymous commenter to Paul's entry on journalism and blogging asked the following question: "Would you rather pay $4.99 for gawker mobile or $19.40 for a NY Times paper dropped on the ground floor of your building?"

I know it's a rhetorical question, but let me just say: I cannot believe anyone would choose Gawker Mobile, nor can I grasp the kind of person who is buying the service.

I'm enough of a loser to check Gawker multiple times a day when I'm sitting around with nothing to do, but never once have I been walking somewhere or sitting in a class and thought "I wonder what's on Gawker now?" or "I hope I'm not missing anything on Gawker."

I've managed to get through my life without needing CNN to alert me that nuclear war is imminent; I think I can manage without immediately knowing that Anna Wintour went shopping today.

So please, would one of the surely dozens of people using this service clue me in to the appeal? Or better yet, send me five bucks a month and every day I'll text you with a reminder that you have too much money to spend.

For an answer, I'll quote Andrew.

"The same type of person that writes for Wikipedia."

Where there is a demographic, there is a way. I believe the flaw in your anonymous commenter's logic lies in the fact that the people getting the new york times on their doorstep, and the people getting Gawker Mobile have very little in the way of similar interests.
