Google: The Big Bad Lobbyist

Google, the little search engine that could, has joined the lobbying in-crowd. It’s hungry for international conquest and, like Yahoo and Microsoft, it won’t let something like a little red tape thwart its plans.

According to this New York Times article, like other telecommunication giants, Google faces copyright law, access to the Internet and privacy issues. It recently refused to disclose records of user searches and was criticized for business dealings in China. But come on -- it’s in the nature of capitalism to expand.

Today’s media conglomerates show that the life of a successful independent or small business is short. There’s a trend to go big and be bought out. I mean, just look at Facebook -- it’s on the block for a potential $2 billion to a juggernaut like Viacom. The vlog Rocketboom is available on TiVo. And that non-Starbucks coffee you’re drinking? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was grown by the same group in Columbia.
