TomKat Baby: Front-Page News?

So it finally happened. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes finally had their baby. All of the speculation can finally stop. Now it's time for all of the media hype to start. Now I understand that people have been speculating on this for months, but is it really front-page news? And the Daily News wasn't the only one to give the story such status.

It's not as if this was a slow news day; yesterday afternoon, people were stranded for up to 12 hours in the Roosevelt Island tram. Granted, the tram story did take up most of the page, but that doesn't make it OK that TomKat still made the front page. And who knows how many other newspapers across the country are featuring it right on front, above the fold? Yes, we are a celebrity-obsessed country, as many of our blog posts will attest.

But what does it say about us when the birth of two celebrities' baby is front-page news at major newspapers? It's time to get back on track at the newspapers and start reporting on actual news.

I absolutely agree with you! I don't why it has surprised me, but the TomKat baby issue amazes me. I mean, I think it's nice that they had a baby, and that ironically Brooke Shields also had her baby on the same day, at the same hospital, on the same floor, only a few hours after, but how many people does this really affect that it shoud be front page news?
