Mark La Monica, Let's Blog It Out

“Why does Newsday.com have an Entourage blog? Because I was crazy enough to come up with the idea and the bosses decided to take a shot with me on it. Last August, more than 60,000 people read it. That's crazy.”

On Let's Blog It Out, La Monica, a writer for Newsday, muses on the series, gets fans excited about season 3.5, and dishes some gossip on the HBO stars.

“In the Internet journalism world, content is king. If you have the content people will find it,” he points out. “For Newsday.com, it puts out there even more with search engines and things like that.”

He’s right. It doesn’t matter who publishes something good; all that matters is if it’s good or not. He continues: “Blogging is about telling good stories and telling them well. It's not much different from an eloquently written column or feature story, except you have more freedom to relate your readers with random movie quotes from the 1980s.”

What has La Monica learned from blogging? “I have used the time and the blogs and the feedback to help further my writing voice,” he says.

Some advice: “You need to start out with a clear concept of what you want your blog to be about. No one cares about what you ate for lunch. But they do care if you ate that lunch with Joe Torre at the Four Seasons in New York City while Naomi Campbell gave you a pedicure and Mike Bloomberg poured your water.”

Funny mental picture, but good point: Have one and people will read.
