Media's Obsession With Brangelina

The celebrity couples have always been in the center of attention and spotlights, in or outside of the screen. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are no exception; they are actually creating more buzz than any other star couples. Personally, I haven’t been interested in keeping up with the whole story of Brad and Angelina. I only kept up with their stories because they were everywhere, being shoved in my face. I couldn’t really miss it.

A few weeks ago, I was randomly surfing the net. Then I found out that their soon-to-be-born baby -- “the world’s sexiest baby,” as the article says -- is worth about $4 million dollars before s/he is even born. The paparazzi are trying everything to get the first picture of the baby. I knew of the media’s obsession about the private lives of celebrities and how they have commercialized them in the weirdest ways, like the Pez dispensers. But $4 million dollars for a picture of their baby? It just seems ridiculous.

For all those lunatic Brangelina fans out there, maybe this is good news. But honestly, do you really care? For me, it’s not going to make a difference whether I see the baby’s picture today or tomorrow, or at all for that matter. I’ll probably end up seeing it anyway if I spend any time on Yahoo or MSN. I don’t know why the media are so obsessed with the personal lives of celebrities, especially with Brad and Angelina. I know there must be interested fans, but for the majority of the public I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as the media tries to present them. Media can either reflect or try to create its own version of “reality.” In this case, I say it is definitely the latter.

Although I'm sure we all cringe when we hear the latest "news" story about Brangelina or Vaughniston or even Britney and Kevin, the fact is that there are a ton of people who don't. In fact, they can't get enough of it. Why else would there be so many different magazines, TV shows, and blogs devoted to celebrity gossip? People just seem to be more interested in celebrities' lives; they can't get enough. Now I don't know whether it's because they are famous, they're filthy rich, they adorn themselves in ridiculously expensive clothes and accessories, or a combination of it all, but people are interested in celebrities and every detail of their lives. So I wouldn't count on any less coverage of Brangelina any time soon.

Haven't you heard? The media is trying to distract us with inane details about famous people and their lives so that we will abandon our own ambitions and dedicate our lives to consumerism.

I find a myriad of reasons to be obsessed with Brangelina. They are beautiful. They are rich. They lead glamorous lives. They eat expensive dinners. They have cryptic tattoos. They take in foreign babies. They give their foreign babies Mohawks. They are always happy and always smiling. In short, they are everything I'm not.
